Faithfulness. Most of us like to think we practice it. In many cases, that is true, but our faithfulness usually runs out at some point. A scenario or circumstance will eventually come along that will either prove or disprove our faithfulness. It’s true; whether we want to admit it or not, we are never completely faithful.
We expect faithfulness from others in our lives, and we demand an explanation when we don’t receive it. Why do we think others can perform the same faithfulness that we ourselves cannot? The only One able to extend perfect faithfulness is our Lord. The Bible tells us that He is unchanging in His nature, always true to His word, and keeps His promises forevermore; He is always faithful.
“Yet this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
Lamentations 3:21-23
We may find that hard to believe because we have so often failed ourselves or been failed by others. The Bible is full of examples of His children struggling to trust him in seasons of disappointment, discouragement, danger, disaster, depression, and grief—only to eventually see God’s faithfulness to them manifest in surprising ways
“All the paths of the Lord are steadfast love and faithfulness,
for those who keep his covenant and his testimonies.”
Psalm 25:10
When we rely on God’s faithfulness rather than our own or someone else’s, there are some things we can trust in:
God has the last word on all things (Matt. 24:35)
God will keep Us (1 Cor. 1:9)
We can conquer every temptation (1 Cor. 10:13)
God isn’t controlled by our response (2 Tim 2:13)
Because of His faithfulness, we can depend on Him, count on Him, and look for Him to come through for us in every circumstance and that is some real good news.
