Hey Friend!
Sometimes we just have to keep going, putting one foot in front of the other with our eyes up and our shoulders back. Sometimes we just need to persevere! But have you ever wondered what allows us to do so?
Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
Galatians 6:9
This time of year, nature always reminds me of the resiliency and perseverance I myself hope to display. Despite the hard winters, cold winds, and stagnant ground, the trees and plants burst forth. Plants know no other way than to continue to try to survive, but if we think about it, without the proper elements, they would not be able no matter their hope or intention. Our perseverance is no different. According to Augustine of Hippo, persevering in the faith is a gift given by God. In simple terms, God is doing all the work. As we trust in Him, he is bringing sunshine and shade, water and air, nutrients, and drainage, as well as room to grow and prosper. Inevitably, there will be weeds, wind, darkness, and hard ground, but for those who Believe and trust, His sustaining grace brings perseverance and promises.
