The Light in the Valley
Even in the deepest valleys, God’s presence is your comfort and your guide.
Dear friend,
The valleys of life are the places we would never choose: sickness, grief, uncertainty, loneliness. They feel like shadows—long, heavy, and overwhelming.
But valleys are not the absence of God. In fact, it is often in the valley that His presence is most tender, most near.
Psalm 23 reminds us that even though we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, we need not fear evil—for He is with us. The rod and the staff, tools of both protection and guidance, become comfort in the dark.
This week in The Lovely Crux, we pause to rest in that truth: valleys are not permanent. Shadows are not final. God’s light is still present, even when everything else feels dim.
+ A Gentle Beginning
Find a candle or small light source. Dim the room and light the candle.
As you watch the flame, pray:
“Even here, You are with me.”
Breathe deeply and let the truth settle: the shadows cannot extinguish His presence.
+ Scripture Meditation
“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
—Psalm 23:4
Notice the word through. The valley is not forever—you are passing through. And the presence of the Shepherd means you are never alone in the shadows.
Ask yourself:
Where am I walking through a valley right now?
What fears feel loudest in the shadows?
How might God be drawing closer to me in this place?
This is the crux: Valleys may hold shadows, but never absence—God’s presence is your light, your comfort, and your way through.
+ Beauty Reflection (Visio Divina)
Gaze at this painting of the mountains at night. Shades of deep blue fold one over the other, rising and falling like waves frozen in stillness. Above them, the moon glows bright against the dark sky, casting its quiet light over the peaks and valleys.
Notice how the moon doesn’t erase the night—it transforms it. Even in the darkness, there is light enough to see, to keep walking, to remember you are not alone.
As you linger with this image, ask yourself:
Where do I feel like I am walking through a shadow right now?
Can I believe that even here, God’s light is guiding me?
How might His presence be shining quietly, steadily, even when the valley feels overwhelming?
Let the moon remind you: the valley is never without light. God’s presence is the steady glow that carries you through the night until dawn breaks again.
